I am delighted to contribute a message to the opening of the Hong Kong - Shanghai International Liver Congress 2008.

As the predominant provider of secondary and tertiary healthcare services in Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority relies on a most proficient team of healthcare professionals to do what is best for patients. With almost 70 per cent of our staff being healthcare professionals, the hospital Authority believes in setting them firmly on the path of lifelong learning.

Our Queen Mary hospital is a teaching hospital and research ground of the University of Hong Kong’s Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. Thanks to the immense contribution of world-renowned surgeons from the Faculty, the liver transplant service at the Hospital has developed into the largest programme of its kind in China and Southeast Asia.

I appreciate that this Liver Congress provides an excellent opportunity for medical experts in Hong Kong to share their experiences and expertise in medicine and science in the field with their mainland and international counterparts. Many of my Hospital Authority colleagues have attended and benefited from this biennial Congress. I am therefore confident that it will continue to be a valuable platform for members of the global medical community to expand their knowledge.

I hope all the participants will have a stimulating and rewarding time at this Congress. For those from outside Hong Kong, I also hope you enjoy our vibrant city.
